Easy Natural Ways to Get Rid of Stubborn Home Odors

Baking soda, sunlight and a few small habits pull smells out of fabric, drains and soft furnishings instead of masking them.

Most household smells are not floating in the air. They are sitting in something: the couch cushions, the bath mat, the trash can, the drain. Air freshener covers the scent for an hour, then the smell comes back because the source is still there. Start by finding the material holding the odor.

Baking soda is the simplest first move. Sprinkle it over carpets, rugs and upholstery, leave it for at least thirty minutes, then vacuum it up with a slow, overlapping pass. It works because it is alkaline, so it neutralizes acidic odors from pets, food and sweat rather than perfume-overing them.

Sunlight does the same job for free. Pull cushions and throw pillows outside on a dry, breezy day and let them sit for an hour. Ultraviolet light breaks down odor molecules and fresh air carries them away. Anything that fits through a door can be refreshed this way.

Drains hold smells that nothing in the room can hide. Pour half a cup of baking soda down the kitchen drain, follow it with a cup of white vinegar, let it fizz for ten minutes, then flush with a kettle of hot water. Repeat once a month and the sour smell from the trap stays gone.

Hard surfaces are the easy half; fabric is where odor lives longest. Vacuum the couch seams with the crevice tool, then go over the fabric with a damp microfiber pad and let it air dry with a window open. If the cushion covers zip off, wash them on cool and dry them flat so they do not shrink.

If a smell keeps returning to one spot, the source is usually behind or under something. Pull the fridge out and check the drip pan, look under the sink for a slow leak, lift the bath mat and smell the floor beneath it, and check the trash can lid and base. Those four checks solve most of the complaints a whole-house deodorizer cannot.

Finally, wash what you forget to wash: throw pillow covers, curtains, pet beds, doormats and the inside of the trash can. When those five items are clean, most homes stop needing air freshener altogether.
